History

The Govans Farmers Market was launched in 2011 to bring fresh, healthy, and affordable food options to the York Road corridor in North Baltimore. Founded through a partnership between Loyola University Maryland’s Center for Community Service and Justice (CCSJ) and the York Road Partnership, the market was created in direct response to neighborhood feedback calling for better access to nutritious food.

The Market Opens

The market opened its first season on July 20, 2011, in a Loyola parking lot at 5104 York Road. Planned with the support of Loyola business students and community leaders, the pilot market ran for four weeks and quickly gained traction among residents and vendors alike. Even in 90-degree heat, neighbors came out to support local businesses offering everything from fresh produce and homemade breads to veggie patties, hummus, and fruit jams.

First Season Success

That first season confirmed what the community already knew: there was a real need—and real excitement—for a vibrant neighborhood farmers market.

Now a Seasonal Staple

Since then, the Govans Farmers Market has grown into a seasonal staple in the neighborhood, operating each summer and fall as a space for community connection, food access, and small business support. The market is a program of Loyola University Maryland through CCSJ, which serves as its fiscal sponsor and provides staff, office space, and operational support as part of the university’s York Road Initiative.

Continuing to Grow

Rooted in community vision and built through partnership, the Govans Farmers Market continues to grow—nourishing people, relationships, and the local economy right here in Govans.
